Did you know that David Bowie lived in Berlin in the late 1970s? His song “Where Are We Now?” from the album The Next Day is a reflective piece that mentions Berlin landmarks and evokes his time in the city. The song was also featured in the play Lazarus, which Bowie co-wrote.
The song includes references to:
- Potsdamer Platz: A major public square and cultural hub.
- Nürnberger Straße: A street in Berlin mentioned in the song, named after the city of Nürnberg, where Exasol’s headquarters is located.
- KaDeWe: The Kaufhaus des Westens: A historic and luxury department store in Berlin.
- Bösebrücke: A significant landmark, known as the first border crossing that opened during the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy—Low, Heroes, and Lodger—was recorded at Hansa Studios, near Potsdamer Platz, further cementing his deep connection to the city.
