Loading data into the Exasol Community Edition is easy – a new video shows you how.
Since its recent launch, the Community Edition of our Exasol database has been downloaded by a wide range of users from all over the world and we’ve had some great feedback.
However, one recurring issue is that users often contact us requesting operating system login details for the Loading...virtual machine – some have even asked for the root password.
There are a number of reasons given by users for these requests – for example, some users thought that they couldn’t change the network configuration of the database from outside the Loading...virtual machine. The answer to this (and a number of other questions you may have ) is on our support portal.
A more common reason though is that users were wanting to load large amounts of data to the database, they wanted to get the fastest possible speed, and so they assumed that they needed to “stage” their files right inside the Loading...virtual machine.
We don’t give out operating system credentials for the Exasol Community Edition image. If we did do so, then it would be possible for every user to amend their system in a slightly different way and it would be a nightmare to provide support in the event of problems. So the Community Edition is a sealed unit by design.
This isn’t a barrier to loading data at speed though. As long as you load the data from the same physical machine as you are hosting the database Loading...virtual machine, you will get great load speeds.
In fact, assuming you have a reliable, fast network in place you can get great load speeds from anywhere on your network. If however your machines are connected (like my personal home network) through a domestic wireless router, this will slow things down considerably for reasons that have nothing to do with our database.
