Turn Process Data into Business Insight with Exasol & Power Automate

In today’s digital enterprise, data is everywhere—hidden within systems, processes, and transactions. Yet making sense of this data, especially when it comes to operational efficiency, remains a challenge. That’s where Process Mining enters the picture: the key to visualizing, analyzing, and improving how work actually gets done.

What Is Process Mining?

Process Mining is a data-driven technique that uncovers the real-life execution of business processes from system logs—so-called event logs. It shows you how processes really flow (not how you think they do), where delays and loops occur, and where improvements are most impactful.

Imagine a tool that doesn’t rely on interviews or guesswork—but instead builds a visual map of your process directly from system data. It’s like an X-ray for your operations.

Why Speed Matters: Building the Event Log for High-Stakes Decisions

At DATANOMIQ, we help our clients gain operational insights fast and reliably—starting with a solid data foundation.

In industries where decisions must be made in real time—such as pharmaceuticals, finance, logistics, and e-commerce—the speed at which event logs are generated and analyzed can directly impact compliance, risk mitigation, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. For example, detecting a manufacturing bottleneck in pharma or spotting rework patterns in logistics can lead to immediate interventions that prevent bigger issues down the line.

Creating these event logs at scale requires a high-performance, scalable data infrastructure—capable of handling millions of transactions and surfacing the process reality in seconds. This ensures that our clients can extract accurate, real-time process insights and act on them without delay.

To meet these demands, we rely on Exasol, the world’s fastest analytical in-memory database—giving our clients the speed edge they need when every second counts.

Visualizing the Process: Microsoft Power Automate Process Mining

Once the event log is built with Exasol, we take it a step further using Microsoft Power Automate Process Mining—a powerful tool that turns raw process data into actionable insights.

This platform allows our clients to:

  • Visualize all process variants and deviations interactively
  • Track metrics like self-loops, reworks, bottlenecks, and duration distribution
  • Simulate optimizations and predict outcomes of process changes
  • Act on insights directly through Microsoft’s automation ecosystem

But why Microsoft Power Automate Process Mining? We chose Power Automate Process Mining because it’s cost-effective and integrates seamlessly with tools like Power BI, Power Automate and of course Exasol—making it ideal for organizations already invested in the Microsoft ecosystem. It enables end-to-end analysis and action without leaving your existing tech stack.

A Demo Story: From Insight to Action

To showcase the impact of process mining, we created a demo based on common patterns we’ve observed in our customer projects. Using Exasol as the backend, we built a structured, real-time event log that captures each step in the process. We then visualized the data using Microsoft Power Automate Process Mining, uncovering insights from over 1,500 simulated cases.

The analysis revealed that more than 5% of cases had self-loops—where a process step is unnecessarily repeated—and 23% involved rework, meaning tasks were done again due to errors or inefficiencies. These are classic indicators of process friction, often hidden in complex workflows. Identifying them is crucial for driving automation, reducing manual effort, and restructuring steps for better flow.

In real-world scenarios, insights like these have led to significant improvements in throughput, cost savings, and team productivity
