      Upgrade solution 5.0.x to version 6.0

      Please note: EXASOL 6 for AWS is available via the AWS marketplace. It is currently not possible to update a 5.0.x installation on AWS or Microsoft Azure to 6.x.

      Prerequisites:

      • Please upgrade to the latest version 5.0.x before updating to version 6.0
        https://www.exasol.com/support/browse/DOWNLOAD-628
      • Full offline backup in the latest version 5.0.x (stored outside the cluster) refer to https://www.exasol.com/support/browse/SOL-493
      • Is it possible to update from 6.0.RC1 cluster to 6.0.0? Yes
      • We recommend recreating all DATA volumes to take advantage of Hybrid Block Distribution (https://www.exasol.com/support/browse/EXASOL-1557)
      • The database format will be converted during the first database start after the upgrade, this process can take up to 1h for systems with many objects.
        Please refer to the following query to determine the exact Time needed for your environment:
        SELECT COUNT(*)*0.002 AS UPGRADE_TIME_IN_SEC FROM EXA_DBA_COLUMNS;
      • Please also update all database clients https://www.exasol.com/portal/display/DOWNLOAD/6.0
      • Please check your backup schedule before upgrading, it might be necessary to adjust the schedule (it is not possible to mix version 5 and version 6 backups, e.g. version 5 level-0 + version 6 level-1..9)
      • In case, of using public bond interfaces, please either (A) upgrade to version 5.0.21 beforehand or (B) remove these public bond interface before starting the update process (and reinsert those interface after the update process finished.

      Is it possible to downgrade from version 6.0 to version 5.0.x?

      No, in case the update fails the cluster needs to be reinstalled in version 5. Anyways, we recommend trying version 6.0 in your development system first.

      Scenario 1 (recommended):

      Overall Duration on same hardware:
      Upgrade EXAClusterOS 5.0.x -> 6.0 + Volume Recreation (HBD Format) + Backup Restore + Database format change :

      Scenario 2 (Keep the old EXAStorage Block Distribution):

      Overall Duration on same hardware:
      Upgrade EXAClusterOS 5.0.x -> 6.0 + Database format change :

      Scenario 3 (parallel cluster):

      Overall Duration for migrating to new hardware: Install new cluster in 6.0 + Create Volumes + Backup Restore + Database format change

      • Install new cluster in version 6.0
      • Offline or online backup of the database
      • Create DATA volume
      • Backup Restore
      • The database format will be converted during the first database start after the upgrade, please refer to the query above to determine the exact
        time needed for your systems
      • Update Database Clients
      • Create new full backup
      • Run https://www.exasol.com/support/browse/SOL-577
