AWS Adding nodes to an existing cluster

      This article guides through the enlargement of a cluster on AWS by way of example.
      It shows how to enlarge a 2-node system with 1 additional nodes.

      Prerequisites:

      Understanding SOL-261 (General information on cluser enlargement)

      Situation:

      Setup consists of two data nodes n11 and n12

      Goal:

      Add new node n13 to the existing cluster

      Step-by-step instructions:

      a. Create a snapshot of /dev/sda1 from one of the existing data nodes
      b. Create a new AMI on the snapshot (x86_64, hvm, rest default)
      c. Launch instance from the AWS EC2 console
      d. Select My-AMIs -> select AMI that you created right before
      e. Select same instance type
      f. Select same VPC
      g. Select same Placement Group
      h. Assign network interfaces and IP addresses 27.1.0.13 for adding node n13 to the cluster
      i. Add disks e.g. (Ensure all data nodes have the same disk layout)

      1. /dev/sda1 magnetic 200GiB
      2. /dev/sdb GP2 100GiB OS/SWAP/DATA 3000IOPS
      3. /dev/sdc IO2 300GiB 9000IOPS d03/d04 STORAGE
      4. /dev/sdd and /dev/sde INSTANCE STORAGE (optional)

      j. Power on node
      k. Add node n13 to the cluster using EXAoperation,

      1. Use the "Copy node" function
      2. Fill in IDs and pseudo MAC addresses

      l. Reboot and install new node
      m. Set active flag once the node is online and running
