The installation task consists of two phases: setting up the network and hardware, and installing Exasol in the environment.

Set up the network and hardware

Before starting with the installation of Exasol, the network environment and the cluster hardware must be set up and configured. For more information, refer to Prepare the Environment.

Installation of the software and cluster configuration

The installation process covers the following main tasks:

  1. Install the Management Node (License Server)
    The management node is the only node of a cluster that boots from local disk. It is installed from the Exasol installation ISO image and is used to bootstrap (cold boot) the data nodes over the network via PXE (DHCP + TFTP).

  2. Configure user access and system security
    Set the disk passwords and change the password of the default user; create additional system users if required.

  3. Configure and install the Data Nodes
    Install the data nodes, configure their network access, and define the disk layout for the cluster.

  4. Create data and archive volumes
    Data volumes are used by the cluster to store database data, and archive volumes are used for storing backups.

  5. Create the Exasol database
    Create and configure the database on a data volume and assign it database RAM for processing. 

  6. Set up a backup schedule
    Define a backup schedule for the database.
