Big Data Analytics: Gruner + Jahr chooses EXASOL’s in-memory technology to understand its readership better

New customer win

Nuremberg, 10 March 2016 — EXASOL, the company behind the world’s fastest and most cost-effective Loading...in-memory analytic database, today announced that Gruner + Jahr has chosen to use EXASOL to power its customer and readership analytics. Based in Baumwall in Hamburg, Germany, Gruner + Jahr is the second biggest printing and publishing house in Europe, and reaches users and readers in over 20 countries through its 500+ magazine titles, media activities and digital offerings.

Understanding its readership better

The publishing company chose to use EXASOL in response to the rapid increase in data volumes in its analytic data mart. Data volumes have grown primarily due to an increase in segmentation criteria, a need for finer data granularity and a more detailed understanding of historical customer data. Traditional databases used by the company proved that they could not handle such requirements, nor provide analyses in an acceptable timeframe to the business. Gruner + Jahr has therefore chosen to use EXACloud (EXASOL as a managed service) in order to complement its existing systems with a performance layer that simplifies its infrastructure. Now, the media company can respond much more quickly and more precisely to its readers preferences and act accordingly.

Besides high-speed analytics, Gruner + Jahr now also benefits from comprehensive support and a system configuration that is customized for performance. EXASOL’s scalability feature also allows the publishing house to cope with growing data volumes in a simple, effective way, meaning that their decision to use EXASOL is future-proof.

“The digital transformation era is a big challenge for media industry. This is not something new. As a modern publishing house, we have developed into a “house of content” and have reacted with a multitude of measures and new solutions,” says Michael Sandbote, Head of Business Intelligence at Gruner + Jahr. “With EXASOL we are now able to deal with increasing Loading...big data volumes with a much greater level of efficiency. We can gather valuable insights from enormous volumes of data that help us respond even better to the needs of our customers. That way, we can ensure our customers are content and stay with us, today and in the future.”

Aaron Auld, CEO at EXASOL AG, adds: “We are extremely pleased that Gruner + Jahr has chosen us for our in-memory technology and that it is now deploying its analytics in EXACloud. The cloud-based service is ideally suited for data analytics projects that need to be carried out quickly or that need to be scaled up or down with a great degree of flexibility. EXACloud offers lot of potential for innovation for Gruner + Jahr as well as all data-driven companies that need fulfill ever more complex requirements when it comes to data analytics.”
